"A Dog's Life"

Sometimes, I'm amused when people talk about living a "dog's life." Perhaps that's because our little dog has a beautiful home, two caring adults to look after him, regular trips in the car, a big yard to play in, and loving friends and companions, both human and canine.

However, the thing that intrigues me is what speaker/trainer Andrew Wood had to say about his dog. Several years ago, his wife took their sick dog, Winston, to the nearest animal hospital, where they solved his problem and sent him home with some medication.

Later, Andrew and his wife moved roughly 30 miles away and were much surprised when they received mail addressed to "Winston Wood." Andrew points out that he never thought of his dog as having a last name, and he was amazed that somebody would send "junk mail" to him.

However, when they opened the envelope on Winston's behalf, they quickly realized there was no mistake. Inside was a birthday card. Having forgotten Winston's birthday, Andrew rushed to the store and purchased the proper gifts.

Over the following months, Winston and their other dog, Sally, received several additional pieces of mail, all addressed to them personally. There were get-well cards after their shots and Christmas cards. Most amusing, however, was the fact that Winston even received a 1040-DOG form at income tax time.

Andrew told his insurance company that his dog got better treatment than he did because the insurance company only contacted him when it was time to renew the premium. Today, even though they live 30 miles from the animal hospital, they drive past some 20 veterinary clinics to get this special service.

Message: If business is not good, give your customers the treatment Winston is receiving.

This concept works equally well for any business. If not birthday and greeting cards, what else could you give your customers to show them your appreciation?

With spring approaching, we often start reassessing our New Year’s resolutions and goals for the year. I am always looking for inspiration to make sure I achieve my goals and I came across a great quote: “good parents are the ones who learn more from their kids than they can teach them.” Can you think of something a child has taught you? As a mother of a 20 month old, one of the lessons I see every day is how lots of little accomplishments (like baby steps) can lead to a big accomplishment (like walking and running).

So how do baby steps apply to us as adults, whether or not you are a parent? Like so many parents, I mark my calendar for every milestone my baby makes - the day he first took a step on his own, the day he fed himself, the day he could crawl up and more importantly, down the stairs, the first day he said Dada (why did that have to come first?) and the first day he said Mama. At 20 months, he is now walking, running, babbling and eating with a spoon. But he didn’t start at that way, before he learned to walk he crawled, then he walked holding on to things, and when he first started walking he lurched one time and hit his head on the table requiring 12 stitches, but that did not stop him. His goal was to walk on his own and eventually run. He did not think he was a failure if he could not run right away. He did not judge his actions or his ability; he just focused on his goal.

Like so many people, my career path has been an accident. I was at the right place at the right time. But when my 40th birthday approached, I really reflected upon my past accomplishments and wondered what my future ones would be. As a new mom, I am constantly inspired by my son. Was there a way I could use the lessons I have learned from my son to help me figure out my future goals? I was fascinated when my son learned to walk – he was so determined and nothing could get in his way and when he fell he didn't question himself or criticize himself, he just kept going. That was when I was struck by the metaphor of baby steps. If we copied babies actions of learning to walk without fear of failure, perhaps we can reach our goals?
